How to Beat the Summer Heat!

Lets face it…

Summer is a blast but we can all do without the extreme heat it brings! Below are some tips to help stay happy, healthy and hydrated while enjoying your vacations and activites!

Stay hydrated

Drink water before you feel thirsty, especially if you're outside or exercising. You can also try non-caffeinated electrolyte drinks, and add a lemon slice to water to make it more appealing. Avoid drinks with alcohol, caffeine, or lots of sugar. Eat foods with a high water content, like fruits, vegetables, watermelon, salads, and smoothies.

Keep cool

Use air conditioning or fans to circulate air. You can also try opening doors and windows to push hot air out and draw in cooler air. Wear light-colored, loose-fitting, breathable clothing made from natural materials like cotton. You can also try keeping your skin wet by taking cool showers or baths, or using a spray bottle or damp sponge.

Limit sun exposure

Avoid the sun during peak hours, usually between 10 AM and 4 PM. If you have to be outside, find shade under trees, umbrellas, or awnings. You can also wear safety glasses with UV protection, sunscreen, and a brimmed hard hat.

Reduce physical activity

Limit physical activity to cooler parts of the day, or gradually build up to heavy work.

Keep your home cool

Use your oven less, and install window air conditioners, temporary window reflectors, and weather-stripping. You can also cover windows that get morning or afternoon sun with drapes, shades, awnings, or louvers.
